Xiaomi has hinted at a possible launch of the highly anticipated Redmi Note 5 in India. The company has sent out press invites for a launch event happening on the 14th of February with a big “5” written. This may be a not-so-subtle hint that the company could launch the Redmi Note 5.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was launched in early-2017 and this does seem like the ideal timing for the Redmi Note 5 launch. However, Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in Malaysia. This means that the company could launch the Redmi 5 in India instead of the Redmi Note 5.

Launching the Redmi Note 5 would obviously make more sense since the Redmi Note 4 is still the most successful Xiaomi device in India. Recently, there have been a few leaks regarding the Redmi Note 5 and it appears that the device could come in two variants.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5: Rumour Roundup

The smartphone is expected to have a 5.99-inch display with a 2160 x 1080 px resolution which translates into an 18:9 aspect ratio.

Under the hood, the phablet will have two variants. One will run on the Snapdragon 630 chipset, have 3GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. The other one will be powered by the Snapdragon 636 chipset, have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Both the variants are expected to support storage expansion via microSD card.

The device will run MIUI 9 out of the box. There is still no word on whether it’ll run Android 8 Oreo or Android 7 Nougat.

The Redmi Note 5 could also be the first Redmi phone to feature a dual-camera setup. It is expected to have a 16MP primary sensor that will be accompanied by a 5MP sensor. To the front will be an 8MP camera.

Xiaomi knows that once launched, the smartphone will be met with a lot of demand. Hence, there are reports claiming that it is stocking as many units of the Redmi Note 5 as possible. The rumored price could be a bit off, especially for the Indian market. Xiaomi would want to launch the Redmi Note 4 successor at a price of about Rs.11000-12000, similar to what it did with the Redmi Note 4.

Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus specifications

The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are dual-SIM (Nano) smartphones that run MIUI 9 on top of Android Nougat. The Redmi 5 sports a 5.7-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) display, while the Redmi 5 Plus sports a 5.99-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) – both with an 18:9 aspect ratio display. The former is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC, coupled with 2GB/ 3GB/ 4GB RAM and 16GB/ 32GB inbuilt storage. The Redmi 5 Plus is powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC, coupled with 3GB/ 4GB and 32GB/ 64GB of inbuilt storage.

In terms of camera specifications, both phones bear the same 12-megapixel rear sensor with f/2.2 aperture and PDAF. On the front is a 5-megapixel camera with soft-light selfie flash. There is a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. Sensors on the phones include an ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, gyroscope, and accelerometer. There is a 3300mAh battery under the hood of the Redmi 5, and a 4000mAh battery in the Redmi 5 Plus.
